So you’ve been playing in our Superbru pool and so far its been pretty much plain sailing. Everyone is sitting on an almost 90% accuracy rate on their predictions with pool leader boards pretty much being decided on Margin Points and the occasional Bonus Point.  The only genuine upset was Ireland beating Australia. There was also been the odd smaller team derby that’s been hard to pick but nothing serious.

This weekend all of that changes, with three big match-ups that are coming up. They are going to decide how the World Cup pools end up and are also going to have a big impact on your average Superbru pool. The big one of the weekend of course is France taking on New Zealand at the stronghold that is Eden Park. Under normal circumstances the French won’t really stand a chance beating the All Blacks in Auckland, but never underestimate the pressure and expectation of the occasion. With the memory of two previous World Cup defeats at the hands of French still quite fresh in the memory of any New Zealander they have to be nervous. To make it worse, they’ve known this game was coming for months now and the endless prediction of another choke must be wearing down on Graham Henry’s chargers. Personally I just can’t believe that New Zealand will choke again. They have looked awesome and they are playing at Eden Park where they haven’t lost since 1994. Saying that, I also really believed South Africa won’t choke again at the Cricket World Cup this year, so use my prediction at your own peril.

Next up Samoa vs Fiji. This game will also be played at Eden Park hosting 60 000 fans that should be split up quite evenly in the stands. If its passion you’re after this is what will be on display come Sunday morning. Its probably to late for either team to qualify for the next round but it’ll be the game where Pacific Island bragging rights will be determined. Also automatic qualification for the next World Cup is up for grabs. (The top three teams in each pool qualify automatically.) It should be a close one with Samoa currently looking like the form team going in as favorites.

Then the last one for the weekend will be the Pool B clash between Argentina and Scotland. Pool B probably is the most hotly contested pool with England, Scotland and Argentina genuinely able to beat each other on any given day. England already managed to scrape through against Argentina to give them a comfortable position in the group. This weekend’s game together with the England vs Scotland game next week will determine who goes through to the quarters. Scotland haven’t been looking to great, struggling against some of the smaller teams. I think Argentina should win this one even though Scotland are one place above them on the IRB rankings. The Pumas just seem to lift their game at the World Cup every four years.

So there you have it, three big match-ups this weekend to get this World Cup really going. Also don’t be surprised if you climb or fall drastically in your Superbru Pools this weekend!
