I would like to take this opportunity to highlight my excitement for the future of test cricket. Even through it is almost criminal that two great test playing nations like South Africa and Australia only faced each other in two test matches this series. It was electrifying!

The first test saw Michael Clarke score a superb 151, Jacques Kallis show exactly what South Africa will be missing once his age catches up with him and Graeme Smith turn back the clock with a great knock.

On the bowling side South Africa seems to have pulled a sparkling diamond from the rough in Vernon Philander who I have previously written off as an average provincial cricketer boasting figures of 5 for 15. Then there is young Cummings who dazzled and at times baffled the SA top order with consistant pace and perceverance.

The series result will not count in South Africa’s favor in pursuit of the top spot in the test rankings. Today’s defeat solidifies their spot in 3rd place 10 points behind England with a lot of ground to cover in the coming series against Sri Lanka.

Thankfully, its not all doom and gloom. South Africa’s bowling attack with Steyn, Morkel, Tahir, Kallis and now Philander must be seen as one of best and most dynamic in recent times whilst the batting line up is starting look a lot more like the Berlin wall with Kallis, Amla and de Villiers firing on all cylinders.

Its a good time to be a South Africa cricket supporter and here’s hoping that the SA duo of Allan Donald and Gary Kirsten can take this talented group full circle.
