In the end it was a battle between 3 Irish players, Michael Hoey, Graeme Mcdowell, and Rory Mcilory. But it was ultimately Hoey who was victorious. This win launched him from 83rd to 15th on the Race to Dubai rankings, not only guaranteeing him exemption to the Dubai World Championship – where only the top 60 in The Race to Dubai take part – but giving him a good chance of earning a share of the US$7.5million end of season Bonus Pool. Mcilroy must be feeling a bit disapointed as he shot a final round of 7 under par 65. At around the 10th hole it looked like Mcilroy was on fire considering he was already 7 under for that round on that hole. It wasn’t a question whether he would win or not, but by how far he would win. But ironically enough, he never scored another birdie after that hole. It was very similar to his performance at the US Masters earlier this year, he looks to be unstoppable but at the end he doesn’t pull it through. With all due respect to Hoey, some might say it was Mcilroy who lost the championship, not Hoey who won it.

As mentioned in our preview, there was a load of South African players who took part in this event. I was pleasantly suprised when I saw Louis Oostuizen on top of the leaderboard during the 1st round. From the word go, he was one of the frontrunners to take the championship. This was his 1st time back at St Andrews after winning the British Open and he proved to us (mainly me) that he did not win it by accident. His approaches were on target and his putts were also commendable. I was a bit disapointed that he didn’t finish on top but securing 7th place is still very good. It must also be noted that he was the top non-british player on the leaderboard.  My favorite golfer Charl Schwartzel and Jaco van Zyl also had great performances by finishing tied 9th. Finishing top 10 in such a high tier tournament like this is something to be proud of. This should hopefully secure Charl a spot in the top 15 Race to Dubai rankings. Go check the lists on the main golf page for the latest Race to Dubai rankings.

This is how the top 5  South Africans ended:

Player Position
Louis Oosthuizen T5
Charl Schwartzel T9
Jaco van Zyl T9
Alex Haindl T18
Thomas Aiken T30
