A lot was at stake in International Golf this past weekend at the BMW Championship in Chicago USA. Firstly, as mentioned last week, only the top 70 performing players of the US Tour could take part in this event. Well that list is now cut down to only 30, and those 30 players will take part in The Tour Championship next week in Atlanta USA. If you remember correctly, Els barely made the list as he was nr 68 on the Fedex Cup rankings. Unfortunatley due to his relatively poor performance this past weekend, he did not make the cut of 30 players, as he had to finish 3rd or better.Charl Schwartzel was 29th on the list when he started the BMW Championship and ended on 32nd. Quite a sad affair as no South African player made the 30 man cut.

Justin Rose from Eng won the BMW trophy with a lead of 2 shots over Australian John Senden. Rose seemed to be on fire this weekend as he was the leader from round 1. World no 1 Luke Donald ended on 4th and was 5 strokes off the lead.

The other reward which the players were playing for, was the teams for The Presidents Cup would be determined after the BMW Championship. For those of you who are not familiar with The Presidents Cup, it is similar to the Ryder Cup. The only difference is,  it is the US team against an International team not an European team. The top 10 players in golf rankings will automatically qualify for their respective teams. In addition to that, each captain is then eligible to choose 2 additional players, irrespective of their rankings. What is so exciting from a South African perspective, is that European players will not be considered because they already compete in the Ryder Cup. This enables some of our golfers to play in this event.

With the conclusion of the BMW Championship, the teams for The Presidents Cup have been set.

1 Jason Day Australia

3 Charl Schartzel South Africa

International team captain Greg Norman will announce the 2 remaining picks on Tuesday after The Tour Championships. US team captain Fred Couples will also announce his remaining pick on that day. He has already picked Tiger Woods as the 11th player in the team.

Let’s hope Greg Norman chooses 2 more South Africans next week!!
