So the Springbok team to face Australia was announced this morning. And as was expected, Vermeulen and Goosen are both included in the match-22. Finally Meyer have listened to the fans by moving Hougaard to the wing and putting Pienaar in at starting scrumhalf. Tough luck on Mvovo as he didn’t do much wrong in the last game, but Hougaard has been very lethal at wing and we know what he can do. I’m a bit surprised to see Vermeulen starting but hopefully he won’t play the full game. I would’ve preferred him as an impact player where he only plays 20-25min. The last thing you want is for him to get injured again.  Andries Bekker and Jacques Potgieter have been completely left out of the squad. No surprises about Bekker as he had a shocker of a game against the Pumas but a bit disappointed about Potgieter. Something tells me Bekker is still carrying his injury which is why he’s not giving everything. Potgieter was one of the few players who didn’t have bad game in Argentina but I guess Meyer had to make space for Vermeulen and Louw. Even though he is not at the same level as the other loose forwards but at least he gives it all for the whole game. We desperately needed a ball fetcher so I’m happy to see Louw in the mix.

The Springbok side named to take on Australia in Perth on Saturday:

15 Zane Kirchner, 14 Bryan Habana, 13 Jean de Villiers (c), 12 Frans Steyn, 11 Francois Hougaard, 10 Morné Steyn, 9 Ruan Pienaar, 8 Duane Vermeulen, 7 Willem Alberts, 6 Marcell Coetzee, 5 Juandre Kruger, 4 Eben Etzebeth, 3 Jannie du Plessis, 2 Adriaan Strauss, 1 Beast Mtawarira.

Bench: 16 Tiaan Liebenberg, 17 Pat Cilliers, 18 Flip van der Merwe, 19 Francois Louw, 20 Johan Goosen, 21 Patrick Lambie, 22 Lwazi Mvovo

Monster Duane Vermeulen will be unleashed against the Aussies

All in all I think it’s a pretty good team and it has far more potential than the previous team against the Pumas. I saw a very disturbing article in News24 where they said that any player who doesn’t perform for the Springboks will be dropped, unless they’re a Bulls player. What a bunch of bollocks! Look at Potgieter. He had 13 tackles against the Pumas, which was the most of any player in the Sprinbok team, and he gets completely dropped. And don’t complain about Hougaard at wing, seriously he was phenomenal last year when P Divvy was still the coach. And Morne Steyn, yes he has been up and down the past couple of months but you have to look at how many times he has saved the Boks. Who can forget the game against the British Lions where he kicked a goal 60m from the posts on Loftus. I myself was afraid that Meyer would prefer Bulls players but after the most recent change, it’s clear that it’s not the case.
