The Open (aka The British Open) Preview
Golf is not the most watched sport in South Africa but South Africans tend to support their sports-stars when competing against the best in the world and The Open will be no exception. We have a total of 14 players taking part in this major. I don’t have the exact facts but it must be one of the biggest representations of South Africa in a major. On top of that, 5 of those 14 players already have major titles in their belts. And who can forget when Louis Oostuisen dominated the fairways of St Andrews in 2010?!
Below is a list of the 14 players competing in this year’s The Open:
- Thomas AIKEN
- Tim CLARK
- George COETZEE
- Ernie ELS
- Andrew GEORGIOU
- Retief GOOSEN
- Branden GRACE
- Trevor IMMELMAN
- Jbe KRUGER
- Garth MULROY
- Louis OOSTHUIZEN
- Charl SCHWARTZEL
- Richard STERNE
- Grant VEENSTRA
It’s very difficult predicting a winner because there are so many great players competing and so many have a decent chance. You might say that form must be considered but it still depends on which player adapts to the course the best and which player just plain has the most luck on his side. I will therefore choose 3 players which I think has a great chance of winning it. Being a South African myself I feel at least one of the predictions must be South African. Firstly I feel Ernie Els still has 1 more major left in him and I think this might be it. He has employed a hand eye coordination coach who has been succesfull with the Springboks and English rugby team and I think he is starting to pick the fruits from that.
Secondly I’m going with Graeme Mcdowell. Reason for that, well just a hunch. He came close in US Masters this year and maybe he learnt from that mistakes.
My last prediction would have to be an American as they have so many talented golfers. Hence going with Steve Stricker. I watched him in The Presidents Cup and it looked like he has the mental strength of winning a major.
Who can forget the Tiger. The hype of the return of Tiger is over and now he has somewhat been out of the limelight. With the pressure being less he has more freedom to focus on his game. We all know he has the most talent of all but the only reason why he hasn’t won as much as he can is his head wasn’t in the right place. It does seem as if his performance is improving so don’t count him out.
Very nice infographic I found on the official website. Some interesting stats.
