For those of you who live in bomb shelters and do not know what the Champions League is, it is a competition held by the Union of European Football Association (UEFA) for the top football club in Europe. The Champions league is widely known as the most prestigious football competition of the world. Some say that the UEFA Champions league final attracts more viewers than the FIFA World Cup Final.

The draw for the group stages is quite an important part of the competition as it can determine at which stage the giant clubs will face each other. The Group stage consists of 8 groups of 4 teams each. Below is the result of last night’s draw:

Group A

FC Bayern München (GER)
Villarreal CF (ESP)
Manchester City FC (ENG)
SSC Napoli (ITA)

Group B
FC Internazionale Milano (ITA)
PFC CSKA Moskva (RUS)
LOSC Lille Métropole (FRA)
Trabzonspor AŞ (TUR)

Group C
Manchester United FC (ENG)
SL Benfica (POR)
FC Basel 1893 (SUI)
FC Oţelul Galaţi (ROU)

Group D
Real Madrid CF (ESP)
Olympique Lyonnais (FRA)
AFC Ajax (NED)
GNK Dinamo Zagreb (CRO)

Group E
Chelsea FC (ENG)
Valencia CF (ESP)
Bayer 04 Leverkusen (GER)
KRC Genk (BEL)

Group F
Arsenal FC (ENG)
Olympique de Marseille (FRA)
Olympiacos FC (GRE)
Borussia Dortmund (GER)

Group G
FC Porto (POR)
FC Shakhtar Donetsk (UKR)
FC Zenit St Petersburg (RUS)
APOEL FC (CYP)

Group H
FC Barcelona (ESP)
AC Milan (ITA)
FC BATE Borisov (BLR)
FC Viktoria Plzeň (CZE)

Newcomers Manchester City received a more difficult draw as what they would’ve wanted. They’ve invested huge sums of money to build a squad that is capable of lifting the silverware of this competition. Seeing that 2 teams of each group progresses through to Round of 16, group A is clearly the most difficult of all. Bayern Munich will look to qualify for the finals as the game is staged to take place in their stadium in May 2012. The rest of the English clubs were drawn into less challenging groups than Manchester City and should progress to the next round. With the loss of 2 key players however, Arsenal will might have to work a bit harder than the rest.

Defending champions Barcelona were placed in the same group as Italians AC Milan but should progress without too much difficulty. Fellow spanish giants, Real Madrid, will also look to advance to the next round.

FC Barcelona will be looking to successfully defend their title with the help of the talents of Lionel Messi

The 32 teams are set to share €754 million ($1.09 billion) in prize money and bonuses distributed by UEFA
