Got you worried with that Earl Rose photo didn’t I, don’t worry it was just for effect. Although I agree with the bulk of the teams selected by my fellow Up&Under engine room here and here. I would like to have a look at the possible shockers that might be slipping their way into the Springbok World Cup Squad.

Pieter (Snor) de Villiers has made his intentions pretty clear with the inclusion of Butch James, who in my opinion is not all bad, but most likely will cost us a couple of penalties and with strict refereeing on the tip tackles, we might even see a couple of yellows or red. The upside of Butch is that he can cover at centre and flyhalf and not to mention the fact that he most likely can take the place of Pdivvy prodigal son, Adrian Jacobs who has probably not done all that much to deserve my criticism, but hell he’s not done anything to deserve a RWC ┬áspot either. I am not even going to mention that blonde bombshell that allows even the most unlikely runner to go around him Wynand Olivier. Oh how I wish Div had the foresight to take Johann Sadie along with Juan de Jongh, they are the future.

John Smit is the most capped international captain of all time, a great leader, a good rugby player, but not our best hooker and definitely not a prop. What if Snor came to his senses, grew a pair like Robbie Deans and left John at home? Would the world end, its not 2012 yet, so no. We have so many options, Bismarck du Plessis who is undoubtedly the best hooker in the world today, Schalk Brits who was voted one of best player in Europe in 2011, Deon Fourie, Tiaan Liebenberg, Gary Botha, Chilliboy, Adriaan Strauss and there probably another 5 we can mention.

Loose forwards, well here I am pretty biased with my number one pick being Schalk Burger, he has to go, so does Brussow and Spies. Danie will be there although I wish he’d learn to go into contact with his non ball carrying arm. Who is next in line, it is surely Willem Alberts and sorry to say I would have opted for Dwayne Vermeulen if fit, but Francois Louw has an outside chance and so does Jean Deysel.

The rest. Although I don’t see the point but Ruan Pienaar will be in the squad to cover the bench and maybe to carry the water bottles because Fourie du Preez and Francois Hougaard are miles ahead of him.

All in all my match day 22 could look like this:

  1. Guthro Steenkamp
  2. Bismarck du Plessis
  3. Jannie Du Plessis
  4. Victor Matfield
  5. Bakkies Botha
  6. Schalk Burger
  7. Heinrich Brussow
  8. Pierre Spies
  9. Fourie du Preez
  10. Morne Steyn
  11. Bryan Habana
  12. Jean de Villiers
  13. Jaque Fourie
  14. Gio Aplon
  15. Frans Steyn
  16. Tendai Mtawarira
  17. Chilliboy Ralapele
  18. CJ vd Linde
  19. Danie Rossouw
  20. Francois Hougaard
  21. Patrick Lambie
  22. Juan de Jongh
