It’s not that we expected an upset or anything, with a very predictable score in the end. Perhaps a higher score if the halftime score was anything to go by. This was very entertaining opening match that hopefully spells a very exciting tournament. After running away a bit in the first half, the All Blacks were kept in check by the doughty Tongans to vanquish their Island cousins 41 to 10.

The first half was pretty exciting, with the All Blacks amassing 29 points setting up a potential cricket score. The Tongans were lucky to get a three pointer before the break. Sonny Bill Williams did not disappoint with a couple of lethal darts and brilliant off-loads. The second half did not go according to Messrs Henry and McCaw’s script. The Tongans defended for their lives, and started to annoy the All Blacks. Only two tries came from the second for the All Blacks to bring their tally to 6 tries. Poor Dan Carter had an off night, missing two conversions, one of which was pretty simple. Relief for the Tongans came when, after a gazillion scrum resets with 10 mins to go, Sona Taumalolo clawed back a try for the Tongans to give some consolation their hard work.

The worrying stats for the All Blacks are the 16 conceded turnovers. The French are going to punish them a lot more if they don’t improve in that area. They will also need to check their discipline, with 14 penalties going against them.
